UNMIK Police Briefing Notes
27 May, 2002
MURDER
For the second consecutive week, the only murder we recorded in Kosovo
was the shooting death of a K-Albanian woman by her husband.
On May 25th, Lirie Vatovci was shot inside the family home in Nevoljiane
Village, near Gbjilane, Her 39 year-old husband initially fled the scene but
later
surrendered to police. The weapon he used was confiscated.
ILLEGAL CIGARETTES
Acting on information received from the public, police have identified a factory in Gnjilane Region that was used to manufacture illegal cigarettes.
We believe that over 20 tons of cigarettes with a value of over one million Euros was produced during early 2000. A search of the factory resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of tobacco and counterfeit cigarette cartons labeled with popular brands such as "Marlboro" and "Regal".
UNMIK Police and the Kosovo Customs Service are cooperating in the investigation to discover the identities of those individuals behind this organized crime business operation.
This case is an example of how ordinary citizens can make a difference in
the fight against organized crime.
