EARTHQUAKE

A strong earthquake followed by several aftershocks struck Southeastern Kosovo on 24/04/02 at about 12:50 hrs. The earthquake primarily affected the city of Gnjilane, where 1 K-Albanian male died and 63 people were reported injured (two seriously) from falling debris.

Several buildings in downtown Gnjilane sustained major structural damage, including the UN/Municipality Building, a Mosque, and a supermarket. There was widespread moderate to minor property damage across most of Gnjilane and electricity & telephone services were disrupted.

UNMIK Police and KPS officers, supported by KFOR, immediately provided assistance to the earthquake victims and maintained a high level of security throughout the night. There have been no reports of looting and the additional police patrols will be maintained as long as necessary.

The KPC (Kosovo Protection Corps) provided well-organized medical support for the injured, assisted with search operations, and helped with providing emergency accommodations for the homeless. Of the injured, 40 were treated & released and 23 remain hospitalized as of today.

The water & sanitation system for Gnjilane was unaffected and electricity & telephone services are being restored.

The earthquake was felt throughout Kosovo and buildings in towns near Gnjilane suffered moderate damage. However, no injuries have been reported outside of Gnjilane and no one is known to be missing. There is no curfew in effect and the situation is under control in all areas.
