United Nations Volunteers in Kosovo

UN Volunteers Arrival
The first 100 UN Volunteers were deployed in Kosovo in August 1999 to support UNMIK as Civil Affairs Officers. Many of these Volunteers worked to organize food, medical care and temporary shelter for the thousands of Kosovar refugees returning home to Kosovo. In the latter part of 1999, an additional 200 UN Volunteers were recruited to increase the assistance being given to by UNMIK in the areas of Civil Administration.

As the political situation evolved on the ground, an additional 400 UN volunteers were brought in April 2000 and organized voter registration, in co-operation with OSCE, to pave the way for the Municipal Elections in October 2000.

UN Volunteers Work
Today 250 UNVs work in every municipality and region of Kosovo. A few of their responsibilities include: provision of legal assistance, stress counseling, medical support, environmental protection, building ties among local community groups, and providing administrative support in courts and prisons. Their various assignments range from train driver and football coach to civil affairs officer and doctors. More

One key aspect of UN Volunteers’ work is the production and distribution of travel documents due to the destruction of identification papers in 1999. Since 27th January 2001, UN Volunteers have produced and distributed an estimated 700.000 ID cards and signed about 300.000 Travel Documents. More

UN Volunteers at the UN Agencies
