   HIV/AIDS Corners

There are currently 16 HIV/AIDS corners maintained in the mission – in all five (5) regional clinics, in all five (5) SPUs, two (2) in Administration Headquarters Building, one (1) at Raiffeisan Bank in Administration Headquarters Compound, one (1) in Transport BBC compound, one (1) in Mission Headquarters Building, and one (1) in Engineering Log Base.

The “HIV/AIDS Corner” serves as a resource area (e.g. table on the corridor, three-story open cabinet, etc) where HIV/AIDS related materials are displayed for UNMIK personnel to read, and discuss about in a positive manner.

The following materials are placed in the “HIV/AIDS Corner”: the booklet Living In a World with HIV and AIDS by UNAIDS; UNMIK Clinic Newsletter; UN Personnel Policy on HIV/AIDS; HIV/AIDS Risk Assessment; Information on UNMIK HIV VCCT Services; HIV/AIDS Awareness Cards; Male Condoms; Female Condoms; Instruction sheets on the female condom; HIV/AIDS posters and stickers.

Replenishment of materials in HIV/AIDS corners is on a monthly basis (when monthly Clinic newsletter is out for distribution), or when necessary as alerted by person-in-charge. Fast-moving items are: male condoms, UNAIDS booklets, and HIV/AIDS awareness cards.

Based on inventory, an average of 12,624 pieces of male condoms were distributed monthly from July to December 2005 – a total of 75,744 pieces. For female condoms, 750 pieces were distributed for this six months period. Female condoms are distributed only during HIV/AIDS Awareness Sessions, and upon request.

  Story of the red ribbon
“The Ribbon Project was created in 1991 by the Visual AIDS Artists Caucus, a group of artists who wished to create a visual symbol to demonstrate compassion for people living with AIDS and their caregivers. Inspired by the yellow ribbons honoring American soldiers serving in the Gulf war, the color red was chosen for its, ‘connection to blood and the idea of passion — not only anger, but love, like a valentine.’ First worn publicly by Jeremy Irons at the 1991 Tony Awards, the ribbon soon became renowned as an international symbol of AIDS awareness, becoming a politically correct fashion accessory on the lapels of celebrities. While this has caused concern to many activists, who worry that its meaning has become trivialized, as well as denigrated by the proliferation of ‘kitsch’ ribbon objects, the Red Ribbon continues to be a powerful force in the fight to increase public awareness of HIV/AIDS and in the lobbying efforts to increase funding for AIDS services and research.”
