UNMIK/PR/627 JIAS Departments to Takeover Sanitary and Veterinary Checks at the Kosovo Entry Points from Tomorrow PRISTINA - Starting 22 August 2001, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development (DAFRD) and the Department of Health and Social Welfare (DHSW) will takeover all sanitary, veterinary and phytosanitary control activities from Kosovo Control. In late 1999, Kosovo Control, a private company, was provisionally subcontracted by UNMIK to carry out all safety and quality control checks on live animals, plants and their products, including food, entering Kosovo. The controls consisted in border documentation verification, samples analysis and physical inspection of goods. Given the increased capacity of the UNMIK Administrative Departments, the temporary subcontract for animal, plant and food inspection has been revoked, and the tasks assigned to the appropriate departments. As described in section 5 of Administrative Direction No 2001/7 implementing UNMIK regulation 1999/3 on the establishment of the customs and other related services in Kosovo, phytosanitary, veterinary and sanitary controls within the province are now assigned exclusively to the DAFRD and DHSW. DAFRD and DHSW have announced that from tomorrow Kosovo Control inspection stamps will cease to carry any legal recognition. All relevant inspection stamps will be replaced by those of the two departments.
