UNMIK/PR/642 SRSG Condemns Attack on NY and Washington PRISTINA -- SRSG Hans Haekkerup today expressed his outrage and condolences over the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and Pentagon in Washington, D.C. "I wish to express my deepest sympathies to families of the victims who lost their lives yesterday in the appalling terrorist attacks in New York and Washington." "These terrorist attacks were not only aimed at the United States of America but also at the fundamental values, upon which the USA and the United Nations are built: peace, democracy, and human rights." "We will not be dissuaded by terrorists from continuing our work to maintain peace and build democracy." Mr. Haekkerup echoed the sentiments of United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who yesterday said that "We are all traumatized by this terrible tragedy. We do not know yet how many people have been killed or injured, but inevitably the number will be high. Our first thoughts and prayers must be for them and for their families. I wish to express my profound condolences to them, and to the people and Government of the United States." "There can be no doubt that these attacks are deliberate acts of terrorism, carefully planned and coordinated," said Mr. Annan. "And as such I condemn them utterly. Terrorism must be fought resolutely wherever it appears. "In such moments, cool and reasoned judgment is more essential
than ever. We do not know yet who is behind these acts, or what objective
they hope to achieve. What we do know is that no just cause can be
advanced by terror." |
