UNMIK/PR/668
PRISTINA - UNMIK officials today moved the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia offices from the former "Political Parties Building" on Mother Theresa street to a new location in the Pristina industrial area, some two kilometers southwest of downtown Pristina on the main road toward Kosovo Polje. The move of the offices, the primary function of which has been issuing FRY passports, was taken to enhance security for the offices and their staff, and also as part of the re-organization of major buildings ongoing around Pristina to support the establishment of the new Provisional Self-Government. UNMIK had been seeking a more secure site for the FRY offices since the assassination of a Yugoslav official outside the FRY Center for Peace and Tolerance last March. After a lengthy search, the new location was selected for reasons of improved security, improved access to Serb communities in the Pristina region and improved conditions for those waiting for passport services and those working inside. SRSG Hans Haekkerup notified FRY Coordination Centre President Nebojsa Covic of UNMIK's intention to move the offices. The SRSG and FRY officials have been in discussions on the proposed move for several weeks. An ambulanta serving residents of central Pristina also in the same location is being moved one block away to UNMIK Police's Station #1. A sign and map have been posted at the entrance to the former offices directing people to the new location. The new offices will begin functioning as soon as Belgrade authorities have arranged to open them.
