UNMIK/PR/427
PRESS RELEASE  23 November 2000

Vehicle Registration Opens in Gracanica

UNMIK today opens a Vehicle Registration Center for the population of the Pristina region in Gracanica.

This  includes a Vehicle Registration Program office behind the Municipal building in Gracanica and a Vehicle Inspection garage in Lapje Selo.

All residents of Kosovo in possession of vehicles are required to have Kosovo license plates. However some regions of Kosovo have not yet been serviced by Vehicle Registration Centers, so enforcement goes on mainly in areas where residents have had the chance to register. The Gracanica Center is the first to be established outside a major urban center.

Car-holders must go first to the Vehicle Inspection garage in Lapje Selo with ownership documents and proof of insurance. An insurance broker representing five insurance companies recognized by UNMIK will be available to sell policies in Gracanica.

The next step is to go to the Vehicle Registration Program office in Gracanica where plates and temporary registration documents are issued for a fee which varies depending on the size of the engine. The vehicle registration document will be available 10 days after the fee is paid.

Two customs agents will handle customs clearances in Gracanica for vehicles requiring it.

Meanwhile, heavy vehicle registration is ongoing in Djakova Kompressor, Ferizaj, Prizren and Orahovac.

The Djakova Kompressor site is open daily, serving Djakova, Peja/Pec, Mitrovica and Pristina.

The Ferizaj, Prizren and Orahovac sites are open Thursdays only for privately owned heavy vehicles, and Fridays only for public, international organization and NGO vehicles.

It is recommended that bookings be made at the site offices or by calling Djakova (039 26415/044 122 602); Ferizaj (044 141 289); Prizren (029 23023/044 127 334).
