Unique business concepts – on rats insects and horses

Tom & Jerry are two famous cartoon characters most probably familiar to everyone. Charming Jerry and his counterpart Tom chase each other episode after episode.

However in ordinary life Jerry is not always so pleasant.

And TOM has been replaced in Kosovo by the workers of company ‘Doctor Exterminator’.

‘Doctor Exterminator’ disinfects and wipes out rats and insects from all kinds of places. This kind of business is also called DDD: Disinfection, Deratisation and Deinsectisation.

Lulzim Katanolli, founder and owner of the company, got the idea for his business back in 1992.

“I lived in USA and there I got my licenses. I finished the exams in the field of DDD and later on in the year 2000 I came to Kosovo and opened this business. The first in Kosovo for DDD”

Lulzim is epidemiologist by profession.

As rats and insects carry contagious diseases he considers his job to be more then just getting rid of unwanted animals, he also regards it as important for public health.

At the moment Lulzim and his workers are contracted by the municipality for a project aimed to do away with all kinds of flying insects in Pristina.

One of Lulzim’s workers, Kastriot, explains that their job is not so easy.

“the job is difficult because the work field is a rather unknown to us. There are some other areas that we know, and those ones are easier. We have these night-lights but sometimes those too cannot help us. So some fields are just difficult”

‘Doctor Exterminator’ so far worked for several hospitals throughout Kosovo and has helped stores and warehouses to get rid of rats.

But the company also offers its services to households.

”What kind of services you offer?

“Services that we offer are various, to be more clear we for example also eliminate “bubashvabat“ and we guarantee for our work. We also do away with fleas and other insects”

Another example of a business concept unique for Kosovo is the rodeo horse ranch set up by Ilir Jashari from Vushtri. He offers horse-riding facilities.

43:08 this was my brothers’ initiative. My brothers are in selling and buying horse business in Germany. We thought to open a ranch in Kosovo, because it never existed before we hope we will have success. 10:43: 36

Again the idea for this business came when working abroad. Ilir ‘s two brothers learned everything there is to know about horse-facilities when working in Germany. This work also enabled them to save up the money necessary to invest in their own horse ranch in Kosovo. Now ‘Rodeo ranch’ is in its first year of business and has 13 horses available.

Nuhi Aliu’s job is to care of the animals on the ranch. As a horse-keeper he starts work early in the morning.

To be honest it is like a hobby for me. Sometimes I ride the horses. I feed and clean them. I have a fun with them. Horses are intelligent animals; they are understandable like humans 10: 32:37

Ilir and his brothers have many plans for their horse-ranch.

They wish to provide options for experienced riders AND beginners.

Above the stables they plan to have accommodation for people interested in riding holidays.

There are many interested clients, both Kosovans and internationals, who like to do horse riding. In the future we will organize a ride picnic.

My inspiration was a love for horses, it is a lovely animal.

Lulzim Katanolli and the Jashari brothers set up a business different then all the others in Kosovo. This and hard work are the key to their success.
