29 April 2005-Week in review-By Andrea Saula

The Head of UNMIK, Soren Jessen-Petersen said last Monday that his organization is seeking a place for high level talks between Pristina and Belgrade.

Recently Serbia’s President Boris Tadic invited his counterpart in Pristina, Ibrahim Rugova, for direct talks on the political future of Kosovo. Rugova responded negatively to the invitation.

The dream of thousands of young Kosovo people is to graduate from a European University, hoping that this could be a way to improve their chances to get a better job in Kosovo or outside. Only a few of them get their dream. Jehona Gjurgiela is one of them.

26 April 2005-Aspects of Return to Prizren-By Andrea Saula

On going returnee projects in Prizren Municipality aim to bring back 200 families to this Municipality but still return to the town its self doesn’t show any progress. Last week acting head of UNMIK”s Office for Communities and Return (ORC) Killian Kleinschimidt paid a visit to this Municipality in order to see how to make a progress with return.

Last year in October, the International Labor Organization with the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport conducted a research to identify the main determinants of youth employment and unemployment in Kosovo.

Since more than 30 years April 8 is celebrated as Roma World Day, and this year on April 8 started the so-called Decade of Roma in the Southwest Balkans. Romas are still living under very hard conditions and much more efforts is needed throughout the Europe to improve their position.

NGO “Project on Ethnic Relations” succeeded to gather heads and senior officials of Kosovo institutions, Kosovo political parties and leaders of the Kosovo Serb community. On Tuesday in Pristina sitting together Kosovo’s decision makers tried to determine where Kosovo’s stands when interethnic dialogue is in question.

Enver Petrovci, a prominent Yugoslav film and theater actor, graduated from the  Film and Theater Academy in Belgrade, and was living in Belgrade before the conflict in Kosovo. Today in Pristina, Petrovci remembers all his friends throughout former Yugoslavia and hopes to establish a Theater House in Pristina.

The European Union Pillar of UNMIK is working towards regenerating and modernizing the economic structures of Kosovo; their mission is to create a market based economy to give Kosovo the possibility of further integration among its neighbors and within Europe. The new Head of UNMIK’s European Union Pillar IV is Mr Joachim Rucker he is often referred to as” Mister” Economy of Kosovo.

07 April 2005-Serbian ex-police General Finally in Den Haag-By Andrea Saula

Serbian ex-police general Sreten Lukic indicted in 2003 in connection with killings of Kosovo Albanian civilians in 1999 on Wednesday was supposed to plead to the charges filed against him in front of The Hague Tribunal but decided to postpone the process until May 4. The circumstances under which he went to Den Haag remain unclear.

Human trafficking and prostitution in Kosovo and the Balkans is still a significant problem that deserves serious efforts by the whole society to be solved. Belgrade based journalist Jelena Bjelica has been dealing with this issue for four years. Recently her second book on this topic, “On the footstep of freedom - Human trafficking in Europe”, was published in Belgrade.
