24 February 2005-Bogë-Ski Resort-By Arta Pllana & Gëzim Kasapolli

30 kilometers west of Pec/Peja –Bogë ski resort has finally opened its slopes to visitors. Although not very well known, Bogë is trying to put itself on the ski enthusiast map by offering seclusion and a burgeoning network of ski runs. Beautiful vistas are reason enough for Bogë’s residents to think that there is a future to this mountain hideaway. UN Radio has this report.

A new profession is emerging in Kosovo. Under the auspices of Kosovo’s office of the Auditor General or OAG – a group of 20 Kosovars are being trained to be Kosovo’s next generation of auditors – ensuring that Kosovo’s government and other public agencies are spending taxpayer dollars responsibly. Few can refute that ethnic and cultural divisions remain in the wake of the Balkan wars of the 1990’s. Five years after the last violent conflict ended in Kosovo, hardly any concrete political steps have been taken to foster the reconciliation process between countries of the former Yugoslavia. Analysts suggest this is because Balkan politicians gain very little politically by advocating for reconciliation with former enemies. But, a conference in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad drew former enemy combatants from the Balkan wars together in early February to discuss reconciliation. UN Radio Reports…

In the first week of February, a panel of distinguished legal experts from the US Department of Justice joined US and European judges to reveal their systematic approach to reorganizing the Kosovo justice system. In this broadcast, UN Radio in Kosovo features an exclusive interview with Judge John Tunheim, the first US judge sent to Kosovo in 2000 who has since had a major hand in helping to draft these judicial reforms

Called “The Right to Know,” the report was highly critical of the international community and the governments of Belgrade and Pristina for not treating missing person’s issues more urgently. 10 February 2005-Money laundering-By Arta Pllana and Jackson Allers

Money laundering as a concept has been around for centuries: money gained through criminal activities such as drug trafficking is funneled through a bank to make it appear as if the money is legally earned – “clean money”. Recognizing that money laundering threatens Kosovo’s economic development and contributes to organized crime and corruption – the UN Mission responded, creating regulations against money laundering. The International mission in Kosovo works and lives in a manner that is detached from the local population – this was the opinion of a group of students who visited Kosovo in January. During the last week of January, the Serb enclave of Gracanica plays host to an annual TV documentary festival. Among the dozen or so short TV films shown, one 12-minute documentary piqued the interest of festival goers.
