July 30 2004-Serb monks returned to St. Archangel Monastery-By Zoran Culafic

During the March riots in Kosovo some 30 Serbian Orthodox churches and monasteries were burned down or destroyed. St Archangel’s Monastery, some five kilometers from the southern part of Prizren [in Western Kosovo] was among those that suffered the most damage – Kosovo Protection Force [KFOR] soldiers evacuated some eight Serb monks just before the mob rushed in and burned down this cultural and historical monument dating back to the 14. Century.

July 29 2004-Returning to Obiliq-By Valon A. Syla

More than 120 displaced persons have been returned to their homes in Obilic [municipality near Pristina] since the violence in March. Some 80 of them have settled in an improvised camp until their houses get rebuilt, thanks in large part to the Government Assistance for Returns project or GAR, which is financed completely by the Kosovo Government from Kosovo’s Consolidated Budget.

As the question of Status looms on the horizon, the issue of minority involvement in civil society is increasingly becoming a part of conversation in Kosovo’s political circles. As such, a multiethnic non-governmental organization based in the Serbian enclave of Gracanica near Pristina leads two radio projects aimed at providing relevant and informative content for the Serb minority in and around Kosovo.

In 1999, Albanian poet Xhevdet Bajraj and Serbian writer Vladimir Arsenijevic met in Mexico City. Thanks to their friendship, the ground has been laid for re-establishing cultural links between Albanians and Serbs.

July 21 2004-Let's talk 5:Kosovo Protection Corps-By Gezim Kasapolli

Last month, UNMIK together with Kosovo's PISG, Provisional Institutions of Self Government, launched the first in a series of TV programms called "Let's talk" wich aims of making the issue of Standards and their significance clearer to the citizens of Kosovo. The fifth edition of "Let's Talk" centered on the 'Kosovo Protection Corps' or KPC.

July 20 2004-Energy Law-By Gezim Kasapolli

Last April, the Kosovo Assembly adopted the Law on Energy, Electricity and Energy Regulator that was later promulgated by the SRSG, which will be the basis for the Energy policy in Kosovo.

The Center for Democratization and Reconciliation in Southeast Europe launched a project that aims to enhance lustration legislation and practices. Their hope is to extend citizen participation in the public debate concerning the recent history in the Western Balkans.

At a seminar held in Prishtina last week, UNMIK and Kosovo's Provisional Institutions of Self Government (PISG) reached the conclusion that Kosovo's individual municipalities must bear the essential burden of implementing and fulfilling the Standards for Kosovo.

Many in the International Community agree that sincere, open and direct dialogue between the majority and minority communities in Kosovo is an undisputable necessity. And in early July of this year, a group of non-governmental organizations met in Prishtina to discuss the need for such dialogue as Kosovo prepares for elections in October.

July 13 2004-Strpce Multiethnic TV station-By Andrea Saula

This week, a private TV Station was officially launched in the multiethnic Municipality of Strpce. Broadcasting programmes in Serbian and Albanian, this locally oriented project is still in its infancy, but the future this Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe [OSCE] venture is in question as the funding is due to run out in August.

This Sunday Serbia will try to elect its fourth president since multiparty system was introduced. After three failed elections most probably after second round of the elections Serbia will get the president.
