29 September 2004-Investors Conference-By Valon A. Syla

During a 'Trade and Investment Conference' held in Prishtina this week, major U.S. companies made clear their desires to invest in Kosovo. UNMIK On-Air was at the conference to explore what companies are saying about long-term investment in Kosovo, and what they are saying is that investing in Kosovo is more complicated than they expected.

28 September 2004-Macedonian Referndum-By Andrea Saula

Macedonian opposition to the decentralization process in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia have succeeded in forcing a national referendum to stop the implementation of the crucial law. The Referendum is expected to fail, but if it succeeds, analysts say it will delay decentralization and possibly reignite political and inter-ethnic turmoil queled after the Ohrid peace agreement in 2001.

27 September 2004-Worl Bank-By Gezim Kasapolli

Recently the World Bank awarded a grant of $4.5 million U.S. dollars to reduce drop out rates and improve attendance records in Kosovo's schools. The Kosovo Ministry of Education is managing the project with local assistance coming from the George Soros funded Kosovo Foundation for an Open Society, or KFOS, which provided an additional $100 thousand U.S. dollars.

The widespread Mediteranian cattle virus known as "Blue Tongue" has led member countries of the European Union to ban certain meat and animal imports from both the Balkans and Mediteranian countries. UN Radio in Kosovo explores local efforts to stop the spread of this disease.

22 September 2004-Banje e Klokotit-By Gezim Kasapolli

"Klokot Banja" is one of the companies the Kosovo Trust Agency has scheduled for privatization in what is Kosovo's third major wave of privatization in the last two years. However, what makes this company of 247 employees different from other companies is the fact that this is one of the rare multiethnic companies in Kosovo.

21 September 2004-Docufest-By Andrea Saula

DocuFest, Kosovo’s third international documentary and short film festival was recently held in Prizren. A Serbian documentary and Danish short took top prizes. The two young organizers of the festival are hoping that DocuFest proves to be a springboard for Kosovo's upcoming filmmakers.

The deadline for registering political parties for the upcoming October parliamentary elections in Kosovo has passed, and it is still not clear if Serbs are going to participate.

15 September 2004-Serb Participation in Elections Part I -By Zoran Culafic

On 23 October of this year, Kosovans are scheduled to conduct elections for Kosovo’s provisional government. These elections are the second set of elections for Kosovo’s Provisional Legislature since the 1999 conflict ended. Now the question remains - will Kosovo’s Serb community participate?

14 September 2004-Flutes Invade Kosovo-By Gezim Kasapolli

An association of young Kosovar musicians called “New Spirit” organized a series of flute concerts in mid-September, the second such concert series since the association was established in 1999. UNMIK On-Air attended the concert, whose participants ranged from well-known international musicians to local newcomers keen to prove themselves in this area of music.

09 September 2004-SRSG Visited Belo Polje-By Andrea Saula

The official visit to the Pec/Peja region ended the first round of joint trips for Kosovo’s new UN head, Soren Jessen-Petersen and Prime Minister Bajram Rexhepi. The final destination on this visit was the Serb returnee area, Belo Polje, where local authorities promised to finish the reconstruction of houses damaged during the March riots. UNMIK On-Air was there and brings this report.

08 September 2004-Montenegrins Weigh in on Kosovo-By Jackson Allers/Arta Plana

New UNMIK head, SRSG Soren Jessen-Petersen has made it clear that the concept of Dialogue must include all of the regional partners if the issue of Kosovo’s status is to be resolved properly. This includes neighboring Montenegro. UNMIK On-Air spoke to leading members of the Montenegrin political scene about how they view Kosovo’s future.

07 September 2004-Hydro Power Plant Initiatives In Kosovo-By Jackson Allers

A Hydro Electro plant called the ‘Kozhner’ plant in Kosovo’s western region is expected to renew production after a six-year hiatus. An Albanian-American Company based in New York has invested 7 million euros in the project and economic analysts say this private effort may be the prototype of what is needed for long-term energy solutions in Kosovo.

Kosovo joined its European neighbors in late August with regards to human rights conventions. The international administration in Kosovo signed an agreement with the Council of Europe that puts into place key methods for protecting international human rights in two key areas. But locals are expressing concern over whether Kosovo has the proper societal structures to guarantee their implementation.

01 September 2004-SRSG Visits Belgrade - By Jackson Allers

In his third official week of duty, new UN Mission head in Kosovo, SRSG Soren Jessen-Petersen visited Belgrade in an effort to jump-start a strained dialogue process between the Serbian government and Pristina. Among the issues discussed - security for minorities, the return of Internally Displaced People, Local Government reforms and Serb participation in the October Parliamentary elections.
