Since its inception in September 1999,
United Nations Mission in Kosovo Television (UNMIK TV) has
produced news items, features and current affairs in Albanian
and Serbian languages for broadcast via international and
Kosovo wide Television . UNMIK TV programs have covered
a broad range of issues explaining the activities of UNMIK
and its four pillars, UN agencies, KFOR and other international
organizations.
UNMIK TV also serves as a resource
pool for all the main TV news agencies such as Reuters,
APTN, BBC, CNN and the European Broadcast Union that distribute
the visuals from Kosovo to TV stations all over the world.
UNMIK TV programs are often shown on CNN World Report. In
2000 UNMIK TV won the prestigious CNN World Report Award
as the best Ongoing Story and since 2001 has been regularly
nominated for awards.
From September 1999 through to February 2001 UNMIK TV concentrated
production on 700 news and current affairs stories transmitted
through terrestrial networks. Starting in February 2001,
UNMIK TV began producing a weekly feature program broadcast
throughout Kosovo on RTK. The features covered current UNMIK
issues, including the activities of the Special Representative
of the Secretary General. The programmes focused on issues
related to human and civic rights, minority community, education,
health, security, law and order, and the economy.
Beginning in July 2002, UNMIK TV produced a monthly live
program called "Dosje e Krimit" (Crime Files).
Each program features re-creation of unsolved Kosovo crimes
filmed on location and based on police case files. Following
each re-enactment, police appeal to viewers to help solve
the crime. Sections of the program also highlight particular
local problems, feature police units, inform the public
about law, offer advice on security and crime prevention
and interview selected guests.
UNMIK TV and Radio regularly produces
longer format documentaries as well as a range of shorter
format programmes including "Ekonomia e Re" and
"Danas I Sutra". "Ekonomia e Re" is
a monthly programme exploring issues related to economic
reconstruction and the wider Kosovo economy. "Danas
I Sutra", is directed at the Kosovo Serbian population
both within Kosovo and Kosovan Internationally Displaced
Persons.
Since
December 2003 UNMIK TV and Radio has focused its attention
on the dissemination and communication of the Standards;
a set of goals for Kosovo. This communication program includes
a weekly thematic studio discussion programme ("Të
Bisedojmë/Razgovarajmo") and Public Service Announcements.
UNMIK TV has an ongoing commitment to
provide material to Serbian television broadcasters on specific
minority community related material such as voting registration,
elections and freedom of movement. All scripts are available
in Albanian and Serbian languages. A synopsis is available
in English.
